Video: SEP candidate opposes Ford Australia stand-downs
10 July 2012
Patrick O’Connor, the Socialist Equality Party’s candidate in the July 21 Melbourne state by-election, campaigned at Ford Australia’s Broadmeadows plant last week. The company has shut production at the suburban plant, and another in the regional city of Geelong, until July 16, standing down almost 2,000 car workers.
In the late 1980s, Ford Australia employed more than 10,000 workers. Now less than one-fifth remain. The two other car producers left in Australia—General Motors Holden and Toyota—have also imposed round after round of cuts to jobs and conditions, with the full collaboration of the trade unions.
